Irvine Still Riding Strong
|
Martyn Irvine continued his strong riding in the P&O Tour with 16th place in this afternoons road stage around the Ards Peninsula. He came home in a chasing group behind the leading break which caused another big change at the top of the leader board. Maryland wheeler Mark Greer was a popular winner ahead of Dubliner Paul Healion (Usher-Irish Rd Club). Healion now leads overall while this mornings yellow jersey Ryan Connor (DFL) was trapped in the bunch which was over four minutes down at the finish. Ards man Irvine is riding a great race and it seems he will not have his 3rd cat. number for much longer!(report by Brendan Kirk)

Greer takes victory in Bangor thriller - all change at the top (report by Anthony Mitchell)
Maryland wheelers Mark Greer ran out the winner of the 4th stage of the event around the Ards Peninsula. The 50mile afternoon stage generally provides no major upsets, but that was not the case today.
A group of 5 moved clear after 10 miles at Greyabbey, this was reduced to 4 and then another 9 man group set off in pursuit. The 13 came together and by the halfway mark at Portaferry, their lead had gone out to 1min 24sec.
Several smaller groups split from the main bunch and set off in pursuit of the leaders, but the Yellow Jersey was unable to react without being chased down and was left languishing in the main group, which came in almost 4 miuntes down.
On the run in to the finish at Bangor, three riders moved clear of the the lead group, and on the uphill sprint Greer edged out Dubliner Paul Helion, with Mike Harrison taking 3rd. 4th, 29 seconds later was Lewys Hobbs (West Wales) with Peter Hey (Cyclestore.co.uk) and Liam Nelson (Ballymena Road CLub) making up the top 6.
This now puts Helion in Yellow for tomorrows penultimate stage around Ballymena. Connor has dropped well back, but tomorrow he is on home ground, and will no doubt be out to make up for todays losses.
